Dear Fifth Grade Parents or Guardians:
With another school year beginning, I am so eager to have a new group of students consider participating in the O.H. Somers Band Program! The study of music can be one of the most valuable steps in your child’s education. Some of the benefits your child can gain from participation in the instrumental music program are increased sense of responsibility, mental discipline, the ability to work together as a team, enhanced self-esteem, and above all, an enjoyment and life-long appreciation of music.

Joining band can be one of the most rewarding, challenging, and fun experiences for your fifth-grade student. To assess interests and abilities, students will be provided an opportunity to “test” instruments in the upcoming weeks. If your student did not get to test an instrument, they will have chance soon! My experience in music has convinced me that any child willing to put in a reasonable amount of effort will have an exciting, rewarding, and successful experience in band.

On Tuesday, September 6, 2022 I will be hosting our Beginning Band Parent Meeting in the O.H. Somers Multi-Purpose Room at 6:00 PM. During the meeting students will be able to review what instruments are played in the beginning band and instrument specific needs for proper performance. Specialists from Taylor Band and Orchestra and Pellegrino’s Music Center will be available to answer your questions. Also, at this time there will be information available on rental/purchase plans, checking used instruments, and suggestions of specific brands to purchase. It is important that

one, and preferably, both parents and family members attend this meeting. If you are unable to attend, I will send your student home with the information presented at the meeting. Enclosed I have included some information to help with your student’s decision to participate in band. I firmly believe that every child should have the chance to learn and participate in music. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Bonitz
